Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is biochar? Biochar is a type of carbon-rich charcoal produced through a special process called pyrolysis, where biomass is burned into charcoal in the absence of oxygen. Although biochar is only now starting to gain traction, it is a 2000 year old method used by Pre-Columbian Amazonians to enhance soil productivity. Early production of biochar was created by smoldering agricultural waste (i.e., covering burning biomass with soil) in pits or trenches.

What is biochar used for? Currently, the focus for biochar is to use it as a soil amendment. There are four objectives for sustainable use:  1) fight global warming; 2) produce a soil enhancer that holds carbon and makes soil more fertile; 3) reduce agricultural waste; and 4) produce clean, renewable energy. In some biochar systems all four objectives can be met, while in others a combination of two or more objectives will be obtained.

How long will it take before I start to notice the biochar working?  In some cases, biochar is known to have a noticeable effect in as little as one day. In some cases where a room is heavily dense with moisture or other pollutants, it may take up to a week.

How come I can periodically detect odors on some days, and other times, I don’t?  Odors and other pollutants can be introduced to a space on a regular basis. For instance, you are constantly putting newly cooked food in the refrigerator. Even though the fridge may have been clean of odors before, the introduction of the new food will create new odors. Give biochar a chance to adsorb the new pollutant, and it will do its magic in time.

How long does it last? Biochar has been tested to last around 2 years. Unlike activated charcoal, it is not necessary to take the biochar outside every month to “recharge”.

Is biochar the same as activated charcoal? Biochar and activated charcoal are both types of charcoal. Both are highly porous in their chemical makeup to trap pollutants in their micro-pockets. However, while activated charcoal requires the use of an additional chemical agent to activate its efficacy, the absence of oxygen is the secret biochar is so effective. No additional chemical agents are needed to create biochar, thus, making biochar a truly carbon negative charcoal byproduct.

Does biochar actually kill mold? Biochar will not eliminate mold, however, it will keep the mold from spreading.

What’s the advantage of biochar vs. air purifying machine? Once the biochar is processed and cooled, it requires no electricity in order to work. There are no filters to replace. It can be filled into small packages and placed into small spaces. It is portable. Abscent Wonder’s products are definitely more affordable per unit, and  one or more units can be placed per room without breaking the bank.

Air purifying machines are large and bulky, has need for electricity and change of filters, and are costly.
